What wine are Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin drinking in this photo? An Italian wine.

The United Nations has chosen Italian sparkling rosé wine “Bolla Rosa” for the traditional dinner of Heads of State and Government at the General Assembly. “Bolla Rosa” sparkling wine is made by Italian producer Luigi Giusti in Montignano (Italian Adriatic coast).

This DOC sparkling wine is made using Lacrima di Morro d’Alba grapes. The grapes are picked from a one small vineyard of 2.5 hectares located in the Marche region. This grape variety is usually used to make red wine, but in this case the grapes are vinified to produce a sparkling rosé wine. Only 4,000 bottles of this wine are produced each year.

Lacrima di Morro d’Alba is grown in one of the smallest Italian DOC wine areas. The grape variety produces a red wine with an intense ruby red colour. The wine gets better with aging, developing a fruity-floral scent of strawberries, cherries, blackberries, blueberries and violets.
