“Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Tenute” (Wine Estate) has unveiled a special limited edition wine: only two thousand bottles have been made in total, of these, 500 are magnum size (1.5 litres) and 60 double magnum size.
This rare “collectable” wine, called “Cabreo Nino“, is aimed at wine enthusiasts as well as top-end restaurants. It will be showcased at Vinitaly, the main international reference event in the wine sector which is taking place in Verona on March 22.
“Nino” is a Tuscan Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) wine and it is made using Sangiovese grapes (95 per cent) combined with a small percentage of Colorino grapes, a Tuscan native grape used to give the wine a more intense colour.
The Cabreo Nino was made using grapes picked in 2011 from selected vineyards in the Cabreo Estate. The must went through a process of double fermentation and was then carefully transferred to new oak barriques to mature for 30 months. It then took an extra six months’ refinement in the bottle to ensure the finest finished wine.
Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Tenute was founded in 2000 when Ambrogio Folonari decided to leave one of the most well-known wineries in Italy, Ruffino, in order to start one of his own together with his son Giovanni.
Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari Tenute is made up of six small estates all located in areas particularly sought after for the quality of the vineyards, namely: Tenute del Cabreo, Nozzole, La Fuga (Montalcino), Torcalvano Gracciano (Montepulciano), Campo al Mare in Bolgheri and Vigne a Porrona in Cinigiano in Maremma, in the Montecucco DOC area. The Estate makes twenty-six wine labels, five types of grappa, the sweet wine “Vinsanto” and extra virgin olive oil.
The Estate has 200 hectares of vineyards and it produces 1.48 million bottles. In 2014 turnover was €9.6m, exports accounted for 47 per cent. The main export markets are the USA, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany and it aims to enter the Canadian market soon. The winemakers are Roberto Da Frassini and Franco Bernabei.
